Born in Durban in the early 1960s, Gary Rathbone has been making music ever since he was old enough to pick up his parents’ tennis rackets to play air guitar to The Beatles. After moving to Johannesburg in the 1980s, Gary became a fixture on the burgeoning alternative music scene as a member of several notable bands including What Colours?, The Aeroplanes, and The Spectres, co-writing The Spectres’ break-out classic ‘Teddy Bear’, which topped the South African music charts for 13 weeks in 1988.
A multi-instrumentalist, writer and producer, Gary has continued to write and record in the years since the demise of The Spectres and collaborated with various South African musicians including award-winning composer and performer…
